Colorful Homecoming

Today I watched a newborn go home from the hospital.

He has an abundance of silky black hair and a perfectly tiny mouth.

I watched him tuck his hands against his face, which made his soft cheeks look even chubbier.

He wiggles his eyebrows when he sleeps and curls his fingers and toes.

He didn’t have anyone to welcome him into the world – to swaddle him or take him home. Mom isn’t able. Dad is nowhere to be found.

I’m so thankful that the church showed up.

They showed up in a colorful explosion of blankets, outfits and a bright blue “It’s a Boy!” balloon.

Mom, dad, brother, sister.

Swaddling, formula, adoring gazes and photographs.

Even if it’s only for a little while, he will receive the celebration and love that a little boy so new to the world deserves.

I believe every once and a while we get a glimpse of heaven. Today I saw it as a white Mom and Dad introduced their Ugandan children to this perfect little hispanic boy.
